Osteopathy
A system of diagnosis and treatment.
Gentle, hands-on care for a wide range of conditions.
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the health of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery.
Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on lifestyle, nutrition, posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
Commonly treated conditions
- Back and neck pain
- Postural problems
- Sporting injuries
- Muscle and joint deterioration
- Restricted mobility
- Occupational ill-health
Classical osteopathy
The traditional study of osteopathy.
Classical osteopathy is a traditional study of osteopathy. Classical osteopaths not only look at the body as a whole, but also approach health, disease and pathology from first principles of anatomy and physiology.
We consider the original principles, some of which enabled the medics of the day to produce well-documented effects of manual treatment on the pathology present at the time.
Cranial osteopathy
Gentle, subtle and refined.
Cranial osteopathy is a gentle treatment. It is not different to osteopathy: it is the name given to a subtle and refined approach that follows all the principles of osteopathy. It is used for all ages, but is often associated with the treatment of babies.
Cranial osteopaths use a highly trained sense of touch to feel subtle changes of tension and tissue quality in the living anatomy of the whole body, and to diagnose areas of strain or dysfunction. They use this subtle movement to improve function in the whole system.
